Roberto Vannacci launches new far‑right party in Italy

Former Italian army general Roberto Vannacci unveiled his new far‑right party, Futuro Nazionale, at an inaugural congress on Sunday. The movement positions itself as a more hard‑line alternative to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s coalition, calling itself the voice of the “rejects and the dregs.”

Vannacci, 57, aims to shift Italy toward a nationalist, anti‑EU stance, proposing to cut the share of foreign residents from about 12 % to roughly 4 % and to discuss Italy’s participation in the euro. He also calls for abandoning the EU Green Deal, ending the ban on nuclear power, and introducing family‑friendly tax cuts, while emphasizing security and defence. Polls show the party already at close to five percent, near the level of Matteo Salvini’s League, and could complicate Meloni’s efforts to retain power in next year’s national election unless an electoral pact is forged.

The launch adds a new dimension to Italy’s right‑wing landscape, linking Vannacci’s program to other European far‑right groups such as Germany’s AfD and signalling a potential splinter of the conservative vote.
