Roberto Vannacci's Futuro Nazionale challenges Italy PM Giorgia Meloni

Former Italian paratrooper and ex‑military attaché Roberto Vannacci has founded the far‑right party Futuro Nazionale. Within months the party claims more than 100,000 members and polls at about 5‑6 % of the vote, matching the Lega’s support. It has already attracted several members of Parliament from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s governing coalition, prompting analysts to warn of a potential split in the right‑wing bloc.

Futuro Nazionale’s programme calls for severe cuts to immigration, a reduction of foreigners to four percent of the population, an end to aid for Ukraine, renewed import of Russian oil and the repeal of legal protections for women and minorities. Vannacci’s rhetoric, likening himself to Julius Caesar and invoking slogans such as “Dio, Patria e Famiglia,” has been described as a “red alarm” for Meloni. The rise of this more radical force forces the premier to balance appeasing hard‑line voters against risking moderate support and the stability of her coalition with Forza Italia.
