Robinhood CEO warns regulatory uncertainty hinders tokenized asset growth

Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev stated during the company’s third-quarter earnings call that the lack of long-term regulatory clarity in the United States is preventing investors from committing “serious assets” to tokenized markets.

Tenev described the SEC’s recent “innovation exemption” for certain onchain stock trading as a “really positive step,” but argued that permanent legislation or additional rulemaking is necessary to provide the certainty required for large-scale capital deployment. He noted that investors remain hesitant to allocate substantial funds without knowing how regulations might evolve over the coming years.

Currently, Robinhood offers approximately 200 stock tokens via its Robinhood Chain network. These are structured as tokenized debt securities rather than traditional equities, meaning they lack certain voting and dividend rights. Because of this structure, they fall outside the SEC’s current innovation exemption. The company is also exploring ways to offer tokenized private-company stock while adhering to accreditation constraints.
