Robinhood Chain fees fluctuate amid meme coin volatility

Robinhood Chain has experienced significant volatility in transaction fee revenue, driven largely by the fluctuating popularity of meme coins. On September 3, the network collected approximately $4.5 million in fees, while settlement costs to Ethereum remained extremely low at roughly $398. This represents a fee-to-settlement-cost ratio of about 11,400 to one.

However, following a peak in early September, daily network fees saw a sharp decline. By September 16, fees dropped to approximately $230,000, a nearly 97% decrease from the $8 million peak seen earlier in the month. This decline was primarily attributed to a reduction in the average fee per transaction—falling from 64 cents to 2.6 cents—rather than a massive loss in user volume. While transaction counts decreased by about 32%, the primary driver was the cooling of the meme coin market, specifically through the service Pons, which saw a 37% week-over-week drop in trading volume.

Despite the decline in meme coin activity, total decentralized exchange (DEX) volume on the chain actually increased by 5% to approximately $12.8 billion in the week leading up to September 16, suggesting a shift in market activity rather than a total loss of network utility.
