Robinhood sees rapid growth in financial prediction markets

Robinhood is experiencing a significant shift in its prediction markets business, with demand moving away from sports and election betting toward financial asset volatility. JB Mackenzie, Robinhood’s VP and GM for Futures and Prediction Markets, stated at the NEXTPredict conference in New York that contracts tied to Bitcoin, gold, and crude oil are currently the platform's fastest-growing products.

This trend reflects a transition from speculative event betting to market positioning. Traders use these contracts to bet on price movements without needing to purchase the underlying assets. Notably, the largest contract event in September was not a sporting event, but the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision.

Technological advancements are also accelerating the market, with cryptocurrency contract settlement cycles shrinking from one week to as little as 15 minutes. While Mackenzie noted that faster settlement increases risk, the market demand remains high. Robinhood utilizes its partnership with the regulated exchange Kalshi to integrate these event contracts into its broader trading ecosystem.
