Roblox and Fortnite face scrutiny over potential political campaigning
As gaming platforms like Roblox and Fortnite evolve into social spaces, questions regarding political campaigning within virtual worlds are emerging. In Brazil, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has been consulted regarding whether candidates can campaign inside these games ahead of the 2026 elections.
While Brazilian electoral regulations for internet propaganda do not explicitly mention metaverses or video games, they include broad terms such as ‘internet applications similar to others.’ The TSE indicates that each case would be evaluated individually based on the specific action and the platform's features. For instance, a custom-made map featuring a candidate's symbols and proposals would likely be classified as internet propaganda.
Platform policies also play a critical role. Roblox, for example, maintains internal rules that prohibit content related to individuals currently contesting or having recently contested public office, which includes activities such as political rallies.
