Romanian banks contest 3.7 billion lei fines over ROBOR rates
The Romanian Competition Council has issued fines totaling 3.73 billion lei to 10 banks following an investigation into the alleged coordination of ROBOR interest rate quotes. The authority claims banks exchanged confidential information to influence the fixing process. In response, several major institutions, including Raiffeisen Bank, Banca Transilvania, and CEC Bank, have announced they will contest the decisions in court, with some even considering legal action at the European level.
Separately, leadership at the National Bank of Romania (BNR) has emphasized the need for macroeconomic stability to ensure Romania's path toward euro adoption. BNR Governor Mugur Isărescu warned that inflation and budget deficits could undermine the country's credibility and its ability to sustain economic growth. Vice Governor Cosmin Marinescu highlighted concerns regarding public debt, noting that interest expenditures are projected at 3% of GDP, which exceeds the targeted deficit.
To meet a potential euro adoption goal by 2035, Interim Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare stated that Romania must exit the excessive deficit procedure by 2030. BNR spokesperson Dan Suciu added that investors are currently seeking policy predictability amidst domestic and international uncertainties.
