Robotic lawn mowers adopt LiDAR and AI navigation

The robotic lawn mower market is undergoing a technological shift, moving away from traditional boundary wires toward advanced navigation systems utilizing LiDAR, cameras, and AI. Recent technical evaluations highlight a trend toward sensor redundancy, a concept used in automotive safety systems like Mercedes-Benz’s Drive Pilot, to ensure reliable operation in various lighting and terrain conditions.

Specific models are leading this transition. The Mammotion Luba mini 2 AWD 1500 utilizes 360-degree LiDAR and dual-camera AI to navigate complex areas without the need for boundary cables or RTK antennas. It is capable of handling slopes of up to 80 percent. Similarly, the Roborock RockMow X120H employs 360-degree LiDAR for obstacle avoidance.

Other manufacturers are also implementing camera-based solutions. The TerraMow V1000 uses a triple-camera system combined with artificial intelligence for automatic mapping, though tests noted some limitations regarding performance on gravel or during nighttime operation.
