In England, the Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust has begun a pilot with a plush, interactive robot seal named Sammy. Modeled on the PARO therapeutic seal, Sammy costs roughly £6,000 and is intended to lower anxiety and improve communication for patients with autism, dementia and other special needs during clinic visits. Staff report that the robot’s tactile and auditory responses help build a sense of safety and facilitate therapeutic interaction.
