Robotic skin technologies advance tactile sensing and grip control

Researchers and companies are advancing robotic tactile capabilities through the development of sophisticated electronic skins. Touchlab has developed a technology that utilizes the quantum tunneling effect to detect changes in pressure, movement, and slippage. This allows robots to adjust their grip in real time, complementing traditional vision systems by providing precise data on the force required to handle delicate objects without damage.

In a separate development, scientists have proposed a hybrid sensing method for humanoid robots that combines electrical impedance tomography (EIT) with pneumatic pressure sensing. This approach aims to improve force detection across larger surface areas, such as a robot's chest, rather than just the fingertips. By using EIT to locate contact and pneumatic pads to estimate force magnitude, the system reduces sensitivity variations across the sensor surface. This hybrid method seeks to overcome the limitations of using EIT alone, which can suffer from inconsistent sensitivity depending on the contact location.
