Robotic surgery adoption in Romania lags behind European averages

Dr. Decebal Fodor, a surgeon at the Regina Maria Braşov network, has highlighted the technological advantages and current adoption rates of robotic surgery compared to traditional laparoscopic methods.

Technologically, robotic platforms like the Da Vinci system offer an immersive 3D experience that allows surgeons to see structures magnified tenfold, enabling more precise dissection and hemostasis. Unlike laparoscopic surgery, which uses 2D screens, the robotic system provides a high level of stability and ergonomics. For example, the DV5 platform allows for extended operations of up to 12 hours without surgeon fatigue. Additionally, robotic incisions are typically smaller than one centimeter and are designed to minimize patient discomfort during movement.

Regarding adoption, there is a notable gap between Romania and other European nations. In Romania, a specialist might perform an average of 50 robotic procedures per year, whereas in Switzerland, a specialist performing abdominal wall operations conducts approximately 200 such interventions annually. Dr. Fodor noted that the highest number of interventions performed by a Romanian specialist last year was only half of the European average.
