Robotic surgery advances through new technology and telesurgery
Robotic surgery technology is expanding its reach in various medical facilities. In Lanzarote, the Hospital Universitario Doctor José Molina Orosa has completed 165 procedures using the Da Vinci robot since its implementation in September 2025. The technology, representing a 1.7 million euro investment, is currently utilized in General and Digestive Surgery as well as Urology, where it has been used for 20 prostatectomies.
In Ecuador, Hospital Monte Sinaí successfully performed the first international robotic telesurgery connection. During a medical congress in Cuenca, surgeon Renán Cabral from Hospital Mãe de Deus in Porto Alegre, Brazil, remotely assisted urologist Francisco Dávila in performing a radical prostatectomy. This teleproctoring connection spanned 4,800 kilometers, allowing a specialist to guide a surgeon through a critical procedure from a distance. Both institutions aim to expand robotic applications into fields such as gynecology, oncology, and cardiothoracic surgery.
