Robotic surgery advances urological treatment precision

Robotic surgery is transforming urological treatments by offering minimally invasive alternatives to traditional open surgery. In these procedures, a surgeon controls fine instruments via a console, utilizing a 3D camera system to provide detailed imagery. This technology allows for greater precision and filtered movement, which is particularly beneficial when working in narrow spaces near sensitive structures like nerves and blood vessels.

Dr. Mihai Dobra, a primary physician in urological surgery at the Fundeni Clinical Institute, notes that while laparoscopic surgery paved the way, robotic technology has seen massive development since the 2000s. These advancements are applied to various conditions, including prostate cancer (via radical prostatectomy), kidney tumors, bladder cancer, and kidney stones.

Newer techniques are also being introduced, such as HoLEP for treating prostate adenomas, which allows for interventions without external incisions. For prostate cancer detection, the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test remains a critical tool for early diagnosis.
