Robotic surgery expands in Brazil and Portugal

Medical institutions in Brazil and Portugal are expanding their use of robotic-assisted surgery to provide minimally invasive treatments.

In Bahia, Brazil, the Mater Dei Salvador Hospital (HMDS) successfully performed two new robotic procedures to treat heart valve diseases in patients aged 32 and 62. The technology allows surgeons to operate through small incisions between the ribs rather than opening the sternum, potentially reducing bleeding, pain, and recovery times.

In Portugal, the Unidade Local de Saúde (ULS) do Oeste completed its first robotic surgery in the field of Urology. The system, acquired for 1.8 million euros through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), provides surgeons with high-precision movements and three-dimensional visualization. The institution plans to extend the use of this technology to General Surgery and Gynecology.
