Robotic surgery expands rapidly in India, led by Delhi NCR

India is experiencing a rapid expansion in robotic-assisted surgery, with the Delhi NCR region emerging as the national leader in both system installations and procedure volumes. Data presented at the Society of Robotic Surgery (SRS) India 2026 conference shows that robotic procedures in Delhi NCR grew nearly five-fold between 2021 and 2025, rising from 2,257 to 10,937 annual cases. The region currently hosts 39 hospitals with robotic systems.

Surgeons at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, noted that robotic technology, such as the da Vinci system, offers significant advantages in complex gallbladder procedures. The technology provides high-definition, three-dimensional visualization and enhanced instrument control, which is particularly useful when dealing with severe inflammation, scarring, or unexpected anatomy.

Medical experts suggest that robotic-assisted surgery may eventually phase out conventional laparoscopy as it becomes the standard for certain procedures. Union Health Minister J P Nadda highlighted that India is at an exciting juncture in healthcare innovation, possessing the potential to not only adopt but also lead in surgical robotics and digital health.
