Robotic technology advances precision in knee and shoulder replacement surgeries
Medical professionals are advancing orthopedic procedures through the integration of robotic assistance and specialized implant materials.
In Delhi, doctors performed what they described as the world’s first active robot-assisted surgery involving a non-metallic ceramic knee implant. Dr. Sujoy Bhattacharjee of Max Super Speciality Hospital and German surgeon Prof. Dr. Michael Wagner noted that the active robotic system assists in achieving sub-millimetre accuracy, which may improve consistency in bone preparation and implant positioning compared to conventional metal-based replacements.
In the United States, Mercy Medical Center has introduced Mako SmartRobotics technology for shoulder replacement surgery. Dr. Gregory V. Gasbarro utilizes 3D CT scans to create personalized surgical plans. The system employs haptic technology to keep surgeons within virtual boundaries during the procedure, enhancing precision for patients suffering from chronic pain or arthritis.
