Robotics startups target laundry folding to enter home markets
Several prominent robotics startups, including Figure AI, Sunday Robotics, Weave Robotics, and 1X, are targeting laundry folding as a strategic entry point into the domestic robot market. Because clothing consists of ‘deformable objects’ that wrinkle and fold unpredictably, mastering this task serves as a critical test of a robot's dexterity, perception, and physical control.
Experts note that laundry presents a relatively low-risk environment for testing; unlike industrial settings, a mistake in a home, such as dropping a garment, carries minimal consequence. Furthermore, focusing on a specific task like folding allows companies to test robotic capabilities in the ‘ultimate unstructured environment’ of a home—filled with pets, children, and obstacles—without requiring the robot to navigate the entire house immediately.
While previous attempts at laundry robots have faced bankruptcy or failed to reach consumers due to high costs and low reliability, current startups are leveraging advancements in AI and decreasing hardware costs. Weave Robotics offers its Isaac 1 robot for $7,999 or a monthly subscription, while Sunday Robotics plans to begin home testing this autumn. To justify high price points, companies are working to expand robot capabilities to include vacuuming, tidying toys, and making coffee.
