Penn State defeats Marshall 45-0 in Matt Campbell's coaching debut

No. 18 Penn State opened its 2026 season with a 45-0 shutout victory over Marshall at Beaver Stadium, marking the debut of head coach Matt Campbell.

Quarterback Rocco Becht, a transfer from Iowa State, led the offense with 271 passing yards and four touchdowns. His primary target, Koby Howard, recorded a career-high 161 receiving yards and a touchdown. Other scoring contributors included Brett Eskildsen, Benjamin Brahmer, and Zay Robinson, who each caught touchdown passes, while running backs Quinton Martin Jr. and Cam Wallace also recorded rushing touchdowns.

The Penn State defense, led by first-year coordinator D’Anton Lynn, held Marshall to just 147 total yards and limited the Thundering Herd to only three crossings of the midfield. Marshall quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson finished with 102 passing yards and 30 rushing yards in the loss.
