Rocinha community initiatives receive recognition for tourism and sustainability

The Mirante da Rocinha has been awarded the ‘Selo e Certificado Absolutamente Carioca’ for its contribution to the cultural, economic, and social identity of Rio de Janeiro. Established in 2018 by social entrepreneur Renan Monteiro, the venue serves as a gastronomic and tourist attraction offering views of the city from within the community.

In a separate development, the Fábrica Criativa in Rocinha is working to transform waste into sustainable products. This initiative, coordinated by Instituto TMJ Rocinha and PUC-Rio with support from FAPERJ, utilizes a three-story facility featuring a FabLab, fashion and sewing areas, and audiovisual spaces. The project focuses on upcycling fabric and repurposing plastic waste into high-value items, such as 3D printing filaments, through digital manufacturing and circular economy practices to stimulate local entrepreneurship.
