Rocinha UP launches sustainable fashion project using upcycled jiu-jitsu kimonos

The Rocinha UP project is launching a sustainable fashion initiative in the Rocinha community, aimed at transforming discarded jiu-jitsu kimonos, mats, and textile waste into high-value upcycled products. Supported by FAPERJ through the PISTA Program, the project seeks to integrate circular economy principles with local job creation and environmental education.

The initiative intends to establish the entire production chain within the community, employing local seamstresses, pattern makers, and designers. To support this, the project will provide training for 30 local environmentalists via a dedicated web app.

In partnership with Lapidar Jiu-Jítsu Rocinha, the project will launch a collection campaign for kimonos in academies across Rio de Janeiro. A portion of the profits will support the martial arts academy, while 10% of sales will be dedicated to ongoing environmental actions within Rocinha.
