Rockefeller University study links intense sprinting to improved metabolic health
Researchers at Rockefeller University have conducted a study suggesting that short, high-intensity sprints may offer greater metabolic and cardiovascular benefits than prolonged, moderate-intensity exercise.
In a clinical test involving 19 young men, researchers compared 90 minutes of continuous moderate cycling against six sets of 30-second maximum-effort sprints. The results indicated that the intense sprinting triggered a significant protein chain reaction. Specifically, the sprinting group activated 32 out of 33 specific proteins known to protect against obesity and type 2 diabetes, whereas the moderate cycling group only affected three.
Dr. Luke Olsen and Dr. Paul Cohen noted that these intense bursts of activity signal the liver to utilize fuel more effectively and promote the growth of new blood vessels. The findings were further supported by analyzing data from over 53,000 individuals in the UK Biobank, confirming that the proteins activated by sprinting are directly linked to a lower risk of heart and metabolic diseases.
