Rocket Factory Augsburg delays first UK vertical launch

German launch‑vehicle startup Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) halted its RFA One test on 28 July at the SaxaVord Spaceport in Scotland after detecting “an issue with the vehicle that requires further investigation.” The problem, identified during pad‑testing of the three‑stage, small‑satellite launcher, forced the company to de‑stack the rocket and postpone the region’s first vertical launch. The mission had been slated for August or September, but no new date has been announced.

The delay underscores Europe’s drive for greater space‑flight autonomy amid rising demand for small‑satellite launches and U.S. defence‑sector launch requirements. RFA, which received a UK space‑operations licence earlier this year, aims to eventually field a reusable first stage to lower costs and increase cadence. Business director Jörn Spurmann highlighted the licence as a milestone for European space innovation.
