Rocket Lab expands defense footprint and advances Neutron rocket development
Rocket Lab is experiencing significant operational growth alongside financial and regulatory developments. The company reported second-quarter revenue of $234 million, a 62% year-over-year increase, and a record backlog of approximately $2.36 billion. To fund its expansion and the acquisition of Iridium Communications, Rocket Lab has initiated an at-the-market equity program of up to $1.94 billion.
The acquisition of Iridium has cleared a major regulatory hurdle following the expiration of the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act waiting period. Concurrently, the company is expanding its footprint in the defense sector, securing major Pentagon contracts through its HASTE hypersonic program and participating in the U.S. Space Force's NITE-STAR program.
Development of the Neutron medium-lift rocket remains a central focus. The company is currently conducting mechanical tests on the rocket's unique fairing mechanism, nicknamed ‘Hungry Hippo’. While the Neutron rocket has yet to fly, the company has already secured its first sole customer for the vehicle. Despite these milestones, the company's market valuation remains high relative to current revenue, reflecting investor expectations for future successful launches and contract conversions.
