Rocket Lab launches iQPS Earth-observation satellite

Rocket Lab successfully launched the Susanoo-II satellite into orbit using an Electron rocket from the Mahia Launch Complex in New Zealand. The mission, titled ‘The Lightning God Defends’, was conducted for the Japanese company Institute for Q-shu Pioneers of Space, Inc. (iQPS).

Susanoo-II is part of a planned 36-unit constellation of small Earth-observation satellites utilizing X-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology. These satellites are designed to provide high-resolution imagery regardless of cloud cover or time of day, capable of distinguishing objects as small as one meter.

The iQPS network aims to provide near-real-time data services, allowing for the monitoring of both stationary objects, such as buildings and terrain, and moving objects, including vehicles and ships. This constellation is intended to support various sectors including agriculture, urban security, and national economies through predictive analysis and rapid data provisioning.
