Rocket Lab Venus mission delayed by Neutron rocket readiness

The first private robotic mission to Venus, a collaborative effort between scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the aerospace company Rocket Lab, has been delayed. The mission, part of the Morning Star program, aims to search for signs of life by analyzing organic molecules in the Venusian atmosphere.

The delay is due to the unavailability of the Neutron rocket, a next-generation reusable launch vehicle developed by Rocket Lab. While the Neutron was initially expected to debut in 2024, it has yet to complete its inaugural flight and necessary qualification testing. The mission is currently waiting for the rocket to receive launch authorization and pass acceptance programs.

The mission will utilize a small conical probe equipped with an autofluorescence nephelometer (AFN) to measure the size, shape, and composition of individual particles in the clouds. To survive the extreme environment, the probe will use the Heatshield for Extreme Entry Environment Technology (HEEET), a thermal shield developed by NASA Ames Research Center capable of withstanding temperatures up to 2,500 degrees Celsius.
