Rocket Lab's $8 billion acquisition of Iridium expands satellite services
Rocket Lab announced it will acquire Iridium Communications in a cash‑and‑stock transaction valued at about $8 billion. The deal gives Rocket Lab access to Iridium's 80 low‑Earth‑orbit satellites and its 2.55 million global customers, positioning the company to offer integrated satellite communications, IoT, navigation and timing services. Founder and CEO Peter Beck said the acquisition “opens a new stage” for the firm, while Iridium Chairman Matt Desch highlighted the opportunity to accelerate next‑generation IoT and PNT offerings.
Analysts note that the purchase transforms Rocket Lab from a launch‑service provider into a vertically integrated space infrastructure company with recurring high‑margin cash flows. Iridium contributed roughly $875 million in revenue and $495 million in EBITDA for the prior year, and Rocket Lab projects revenue of $914 million in 2026 and about $2 billion by 2029, though integration and the rollout of the upcoming Neutron launch vehicle carry execution risk.
The acquisition is viewed as one of the most significant moves in the commercial space sector in recent years, expanding Rocket Lab's market reach beyond launch services into satellite‑based data and communications.
