During a recent World Rowing Congress, officials from the British, German, and New Zealand federations raised concerns regarding the venue's safety, sustainability, and fairness. German Rowing Federation president Moritz Petri noted that elite athletes expressed reluctance to compete at the site, citing logistical challenges and suggesting the use of the former Sydney 2000 regatta course as a more sustainable alternative.

A petition signed by more than 500 athletes, including Olympic champion Drew Ginn, has called for the venue to be relocated to southeast Queensland. In response, Premier Crisafulli maintained that the government is committed to delivering a world-class venue in Rockhampton, arguing that concerns regarding flooding and tidal movements are unfounded.
