Rockhampton Regional Council diverts nearly half of waste from landfill
The Rockhampton Regional Council in Queensland has diverted 47.8 per cent of the region’s collected waste from landfills through its recycling and recovery programs. Over the past year, the council recovered more than 55,000 tonnes of material.
The construction sector achieved the highest diversion rate at 96.4 per cent, recovering over 16,500 tonnes of materials including asphalt, concrete, and clean fill. The commercial and industrial sector diverted approximately 44 per cent of its waste, while households and kerbside services recovered more than 15,600 tonnes of green waste, metals, and cardboard.
To support these efforts, $5.7 million has been allocated in the budget for waste management capital works. Current initiatives include Reviva Ibis reuse shops, free e-waste recycling, household battery recycling, and polystyrene recycling programs.
