Fitzroy River approved as Brisbane 2032 Olympic rowing venue

The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Queensland, has been officially approved as the venue for rowing, para-rowing, canoe sprint, and para-canoe events for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The decision follows an independent technical assessment that concluded the site is suitable for international competition.

The selection has been controversial due to the river being a known habitat for approximately 500 saltwater crocodiles. While the technical assessment focused on water levels, currents, weather, and flood risks, it did not specifically address the crocodile presence. However, officials have stated that emergency management plans are in place to ensure athlete safety.

Some athletes and rowing officials, including three-time Olympic gold medalist Drew Ginn, have expressed concerns regarding the venue. These concerns include the potential impact of crocodiles on safety, the fairness of the course due to river currents, and the logistical challenges of hosting events 600 kilometers from Brisbane. Despite an open letter signed by over 500 rowers requesting an alternative site in southeast Queensland, the Queensland government has moved forward with the Rockhampton location.
