Rockstar Games development approach for Grand Theft Auto 6
The upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to feature a story mode exceeding 80 hours, with total gameplay potentially surpassing 100 hours. Former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij noted the franchise's evolution from 2D origins in 1997 to the expansive 3D worlds seen in titles like Vice City and San Andreas.
Due to the massive scale of the project, it is unlikely that any single executive at Rockstar Games possesses a complete overview of every feature within the game. Instead, the studio utilizes a structured hierarchy that grants developers significant autonomy. This approach allows creators to implement highly detailed, niche elements independently, similar to the environmental reactivity seen in Red Dead Redemption 2.
This philosophy of providing creative freedom is intended to enhance realism and polish, distinguishing high-quality AAA titles from their competitors by allowing developers to add spontaneous, refined details that might not be part of a formal task list.
