Rockstar Games explores diverse genres prior to GTA success

Before establishing itself through franchises like ‘Grand Theft Auto’ and ‘Red Dead Redemption’, Rockstar Games explored various genres and collaborated with external studios to define its identity. Since its inception as a label in 1998, the company has released titles that differ significantly from its current open-world crime themes.

One such example is ‘Wild Metal’, released for Dreamcast in 2000 following the PC release of ‘Wild Metal Country’ in 1999. Developed by DMA Design, the game involves controlling armed machines on different planets to recover energy cores and fight mechanical forces within the Tehric system. While distinct from the company's modern focus on urban heists and outlaws, these early projects represent the developmental stages of the studio.
