Rockstar Games announced that owners of Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 4 or the digital version on Xbox One can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions at no cost starting 18 June 2026. The free upgrade includes technical enhancements, progress migration for story and online modes, new vehicles, and additional features. PC players can also upgrade from the legacy to the enhanced version with exclusive ray‑tracing and global illumination improvements.

The upgrade policy differs between platforms: all PS4 owners, including those with physical discs, receive the free next‑gen version, while only digital Xbox One owners are eligible. Physical Xbox disc owners are excluded due to platform‑specific limitations, prompting criticism over the unequal treatment of gamers ahead of the upcoming GTA 6 release.
