Rockstar Games suspected hacking during Red Dead Redemption multiplayer launch
During the 2010 launch of Red Dead Redemption’s multiplayer mode, Rockstar Games developers initially suspected a massive external hack due to extreme technical glitches. Players reported surreal occurrences, including flying characters and players riding chickens, which caused the development team to believe the game was being deliberately manipulated.
Former Rockstar developer Kris Roberts revealed that the chaos was actually caused by a resource-management error involving virtual gold bags. These items from a competitive mode would leak into free-roam sessions when players left at specific moments. The accumulation of these objects consumed excessive system memory, causing gameplay scripts and rules to fail.
To resolve the issue without waiting weeks for a full console patch, the team implemented a cleanup script delivered via the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 storage-update systems. This fix restored stable gameplay to public sessions in less than 24 hours.
