Rockstar North head discusses Grand Theft Auto VI development
Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, has shared insights into the development of Grand Theft Auto VI, noting that the team faces significant internal pressure to meet their own high standards and deliver a perfect experience.
Nelson highlighted major technical evolutions in the title, specifically regarding NPC (non-player character) interactions. Building on technology from Red Dead Redemption 2, the new system aims for greater realism, where NPCs may react to being eavesdropped on or followed. The game features a dense, expansive world set in the state of Leonida, including Vice City, designed to encourage exploration through high-quality, immersive activities.
A new “Criminal Profile” system will also influence gameplay, acting as an evolution of the honor system seen in previous Rockstar titles. This system will track player actions, allowing for varying degrees of escalation in criminal behavior and narrative consequences. The game is currently slated for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
