Rocky Canyon Fire reaches 15,000 acres in Utah

The Rocky Canyon Fire in Northern Utah has expanded significantly, reaching approximately 15,000 acres due to high temperatures, dry fuel, and erratic winds of up to 40 mph. The blaze has forced mandatory evacuations for residents in Henefer, specifically those west of 300 West and along West Henefer Road, while other areas remain under high alert.

Firefighters have utilized aggressive backburning and strategic firing operations to protect vulnerable areas, including East Canyon State Park and the I-80/I-84 junction. Despite these efforts, the fire's rapid growth and unpredictable behavior have challenged containment efforts.

In addition to the physical threat, a technical glitch in the Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) caused widespread confusion. A mandatory evacuation alert intended for a small group near West Henefer Road was mistakenly broadcast to thousands of residents across Summit County and other parts of Northern Utah, prompting a large-scale emergency response to manage public panic.
