Rocky Marciano: Undefeated heavyweight champion marks 103rd birth anniversary

The 103rd anniversary of the birth of Rocky Marciano, born Rocco Francis Marchegiano on September 1, 1923, in Brockton, Massachusetts, is being observed. Marciano remains the only heavyweight champion to retire with an undefeated professional record, finishing his career with 49 wins in 49 fights, including 43 knockouts.

Born to Italian immigrants, Marciano's heritage is noted through his father, Pierino Marchegiano from Ripa Teatina, and his mother, Pasqualina Picciuto from San Bartolomeo in Galdo. He rose to prominence by winning the world heavyweight title on September 23, 1952, after defeating Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13th round. He held the championship from 1952 to 1956, facing notable opponents such as Archie Moore and Ezzard Charles.
