Rocky Mountain drought drives hungry bears into urban areas
Widespread drought in the Rocky Mountains has reduced natural food supplies such as nuts and berries, driving black bears into urban areas and increasing conflicts with humans. Wildlife officials report a significant rise in bear sightings and encounters across the region.
In Colorado, sightings and conflicts have doubled compared to previous averages. Notable incidents include a bear becoming trapped inside a vehicle in Gold Hill and another requiring relocation from Colorado State University. In Utah and New Mexico, wildlife managers have noted record numbers of bears raiding homes, cars, and campgrounds as they search for sustenance.
These encounters pose risks to both humans and animals. While some bears have been tranquilized and relocated, others have died from heat exhaustion or have been killed by officials to ensure public safety.
