Rocky Mountains black bears increasingly enter human areas due to drought

Hungry black bears are increasingly entering human settlements across the Rocky Mountains due to widespread drought. The lack of nuts, berries, and other natural vegetation is forcing the animals to leave their usual territories in search of food.

In Gold Hill, Colorado, a black bear became trapped inside a Toyota SUV, honking the horn and damaging the interior before being freed. Officials in Colorado report that human-bear conflicts have doubled compared to previous averages. Similar trends are being observed in New Mexico and Utah, where wildlife managers report record numbers of hungry bears raiding homes, vehicles, and campsites.

These encounters can be fatal for the animals; one bear recently died from heat exhaustion after becoming stuck in a vehicle in Colorado Springs. Wildlife authorities have had to euthanize dozens of bears to protect public safety, while others have been relocated following sightings in urban areas like Denver and Moab.
