Roda de Berà wall collapse kills mother and daughter
A mother and her 18-year-old daughter have died following a wall collapse in Roda de Berà, Tarragona, during intense torrential rains last Saturday. The victims were at a market stall near the port when the structure gave way, trapping them under the debris.
The local council has declared two days of official mourning and organized a minute of silence to honor the deceased. Salvador Illa, President of the Generalitat, expressed his condolences, describing the event as ‘deeply striking.’
The storm caused widespread damage across the region, including flooding, fallen trees, and the evacuation of hundreds of people from a nearby campsite. The incident has sparked political debate regarding the failure to activate the ES-Alert system. While opposition parties criticized the lack of warning, the Catalan administration stated that the weather forecast did not predict a storm of such extreme intensity, noting that alert levels had not reached the threshold required for a mass notification.
