Rodent prevention: How to seal homes against rats and mice

As autumn approaches, the risk of rat and mouse infestations increases as rodents seek warm, dry shelter and food sources. Rats can enter buildings through gaps as small as 15 millimeters, while mice can squeeze through openings of only 5 to 6 millimeters.

To prevent entry, experts suggest using steel wool to fill small gaps around pipes and cables, securing it with quick-setting cement or other rodent-proof materials. The British Pest Control Association recommends this method. Other preventative measures include installing metal mesh over ventilation openings and inspecting foundations, attics, and floorboards for cracks.

Garden maintenance is also critical. Following periods of drought, rodents may be drawn to residential areas in search of water and food. Potential attractants include bird baths, standing water near pools, compost heaps, open trash bins, pet food, and fallen fruit. Managing these resources and ensuring waste is properly sealed can help deter pests from entering gardens and homes.
