Rodney Hinton Jr convicted of murdering Ohio sheriff's deputy
Rodney Hinton Jr, 40, has been convicted of murder, reckless homicide, and felonious assault following a fatal collision in Cincinnati that killed Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Deputy Larry Ray Henderson Jr. The incident occurred on May 2, 2025, near the University of Cincinnati during a graduation event, where Henderson was directing traffic in an off-duty capacity.
The conviction follows a 10-day trial where jurors rejected Hinton's insanity defense. The defense argued that Hinton, who has a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, was unable to understand the wrongfulness of his actions due to the trauma of watching body-camera footage of his 18-year-old son, Ryan Hinton, being fatally shot by police the previous day. Prosecutors maintained that Hinton deliberately drove toward Henderson and made no attempt to slow down.
The shooting of Ryan Hinton was previously determined by the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office to be legally justified, as the officer reported the teenager had pointed a loaded gun at police during a confrontation.
