Rodney Jose, former Malawi Police Chief, dies
Former Malawi Inspector General of Police Rodney Jose has died following a short illness. National Police spokesperson Gladys Chiwaula confirmed that Jose passed away at the ABC Clinic in Lilongwe after being rushed there after falling ill.
Jose had a 36-year career in the Malawi Police Service, serving under five different presidents. He was appointed acting Inspector General in April 2018 and was formally confirmed by Parliament in June of that year. He served in the role for approximately 16 months before retiring in 2019.
His tenure as the 18th Inspector General coincided with significant political unrest, including the 2019 demonstrations where civil society groups and opposition supporters protested presidential election results. His career also included service as the Police Commissioner for the Southern Region during the period of the 2011 Robert Chasowa investigation.
