Rodrigo Bentancur red card upheld by Premier League panel

The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel has ruled that Rodrigo Bentancur’s straight red card during Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United was correct. The panel determined that the midfielder’s actions, which involved driving his head into Manchester United’s Luke Shaw, met the threshold for violent conduct.

As a result of the ruling, the Uruguayan international will serve a three-match suspension. The incident occurred in the 78th minute at Old Trafford, sparking a confrontation that led referee Stuart Attwell to dismiss Bentancur.

Despite the dismissal, Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi defended the team's response to the incident. While acknowledging the headbutt was a mistake and not the correct reaction in football, De Zerbi stated that the moment prompted the squad to play with more courage and energy, helping them secure a stoppage-time equalizer through Dominic Solanke.
