Rodrigo Cass, prominent Brazilian artist, dies at 43
Brazilian visual artist Rodrigo Cass has died at age 43 following a drowning accident at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro. The incident occurred on a Thursday, and despite rescue efforts by the Fire Department, Cass passed away at the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital.
Cass was a prominent figure in contemporary art, known for works that explored the intersection of spirituality, color, and form. A former Carmelite seminarian, his artistic practice often incorporated Catholic iconography and materials such as concrete, linen, and fiberglass. His work bridged the gap between the sacred and the terrestrial, often utilizing photography, video, and sculpture.
His career included exhibitions at major international institutions, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Nevada Museum of Art in the United States, and the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (MAM). His representative gallery, Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel, released a statement mourning his loss, describing him as a generous presence who made a significant contribution to the art scene. His funeral services are scheduled to take place in São Paulo.
