Rodrigo Lara faces satire over earthquake reconstruction proposal

Colombian Interior Minister Rodrigo Lara has faced criticism and satire following his proposals for reconstructing homes damaged in the August 10 earthquake. During a visit to affected areas in Buenaventura, Lara suggested that for homes deemed technically recoverable, the government could provide materials such as wood and cement while residents provide the labor.

Lara’s comments, including a colloquial reference that some repairs could be done ‘in two minutes’, sparked backlash for appearing to trivialize the complexity of earthquake recovery. The comedians Camilo Sánchez and Camilo Pardo, known as ‘Fuck News’, parodied the minister by dubbing him ‘Lara la Exploradora’, a play on the children’s character Dora the Explorer. The satire highlighted the perceived gap between the government’s simplified reconstruction plan and the serious reality faced by displaced families.
