Roermond city hall opens to residents for democracy event

The Roermond city hall is opening its doors to residents on Friday, October 9, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM as part of the ‘Aan jou de troon’ initiative. The event aims to increase engagement with local democracy by allowing citizens to visit areas of the building usually inaccessible to the public.

Activities include a democracy meal, a mini-cinema featuring the Roermond Throne Speech, a quiz in the council chamber, and tours of the town hall and the Historiehuis. The program is designed to show residents how they can participate in local governance beyond just voting, such as contributing ideas for their neighborhoods or joining community groups.

Mayor Yolanda Hoogtanders emphasized that a strong democracy requires continuous work through active participation and listening to diverse opinions. The event also connects to an exhibition at the Cuypershuis titled ‘Van Maker tot Majesteit’, using the throne as a symbol to link national and local democratic processes.
