Roger Craig reveals dementia diagnosis during Hall of Fame speech
During his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, former San Francisco 49ers running back Roger Craig revealed he has been diagnosed with vascular dementia.
Craig delivered his remarks via a pre-recorded video message while seated on stage. He stated that his doctors believe the condition may be related, at least in part, to the concussions he sustained during his 11-year NFL career. He noted that the changes were gradual and were initially dismissed as normal aging before his family noticed the symptoms.
Despite the diagnosis, Craig expressed gratitude for his football career, stating, “Football gave me opportunities beyond anything I can imagine. It helped shape the man I became.” He shared his story to encourage others to monitor their health and seek medical help when necessary, emphasizing that the diagnosis does not define him.
Craig, a three-time Super Bowl champion and 1988 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, was the first player in league history to record both 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season.
