Roger Waters criticizes Mick Jagger over political stance
Roger Waters, the former Pink Floyd musician and activist, has criticized Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger for a perceived lack of political engagement and empathy. During an appearance on the Due Dissidence podcast, Waters claimed that Jagger is primarily focused on his physical appearance and bank account rather than global crises.
Waters suggested that the nature of pop stardom, which involves performing for massive crowds to maintain a certain image, can hinder an artist's ability to develop empathy for vulnerable populations, such as those affected by poverty or genocide. He characterized Jagger's approach to serious questioning as being dismissive or overly calm, suggesting the singer pretends that global issues are not occurring.
These comments follow a recent interview Jagger gave to The New York Times, where he stated that he does not believe his role is to provide “political sermons” to his fans.
