Rogowiec illegal landfill: Massive chemical waste removal underway

Authorities are conducting a major operation to remove approximately 50,000 tons of chemicals from an illegal landfill in Rogowiec, located near the Bełchatów Power Station. The site is considered an ‘ecological bomb’ due to its proximity to the strategic energy complex and the risk of leaks or explosions during hot weather.

The illegal activity reportedly began in 2017 when a company named Plastiks started operations at the site. While initially permitted to collect plastic waste, inspections by the Provincial Inspector for Environmental Protection revealed that unauthorized hazardous materials were also being stored. The removal process is expected to be extremely costly and could take up to several years to complete.
