Rogue Planets in the Milky Way Reveal New Orphan World Population

Recent observations suggest the Milky Way may host billions of free‑floating or “rogue” planets, objects that drift without orbiting a star. Infrared surveys and gravitational microlensing have begun to detect them, and two formation pathways are discussed: violent ejection from young planetary systems and direct collapse of gas clouds, similar to star formation. Upcoming missions such as the Roman Space Telescope and data from Euclid are expected to expand the census.

The James Webb Space Telescope has imaged hundreds of candidate low‑mass objects in regions like the Orion nebula, blurring the line between planets, brown dwarfs and failed stars. Ground‑based observations with the Very Large Telescope have also identified a moon‑like body of planetary mass orbiting an intermediate object that is neither a planet nor a star, further challenging classification schemes.
